Never have I ever

pretended to need help with a zipper.

Hold up ten fingers each. The game needs nothing else, and your hands double as the scoreboard.

Tap for a line and read it out. “Never have I ever pretended to need help with a zipper.” Anyone who has done the thing folds a finger down, and then the interrogation begins, because you’ve been together long enough to know that zipper was working perfectly well.

How a round goes

Take turns reading. Fold a finger if it’s true of you. Whoever folds gets the option of telling the story, and the listener gets a single follow-up question. The first of you to fold all ten has lost, and owes whatever penalty you settled on beforehand, a back rub, say, or breakfast tomorrow.

These lines are about you two and your own grown-up misadventures, so most are funny before they’re anything else, and the ones that give you ideas can be taken further in intimate questions.

Agree on two things first

The penalty, and the fact that the stories are voluntary. Folding a finger is all the game requires; the details can stay with you if you’d rather keep them, and your partner won’t dig. A line that doesn’t suit tonight gets skipped without comment, and you go on to the next one.

Loopholes and timing

If you’ve both done everything on a line, you both fold and you both owe. Adding your own lines doesn’t need the page at all, and taking turns inventing them about each other is a good way to end the game once the deck has warmed you up. Nothing gets recorded along the way: the game just shows the next line, and the page has no idea which fingers went down. One game of ten fingers takes about twenty minutes, longer if the stories are good, and there are enough lines for several evenings, with no repeats until you’ve seen them all.
